Girls E-Mentorship (GEM)

NOT FOR PROFIT · Annual Report · 2025

CASE STUDY

A shift from data-led reporting to a more human, story-driven narrative.

The Challenge

Girls E-Mentorship (GEM) is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young women through mentorship, education, and career exploration. As GEM continued to grow, its annual report needed to evolve beyond a visually strong, data-led piece into a more cohesive and meaningful story. With a renewed focus on storytelling, there was an opportunity to better align content and design — creating a clearer connection between need, impact, and audience understanding.

The Approach

Working closely with GEM’s team, the report was structured around a journey-based framework that moved readers through the mentorship experience — from initial connection to long-term impact.

Design and content were developed together to create a cohesive experience across the report. Consistent visual framing highlighted mentors and mentees, quotes brought human voices forward, and data was integrated within the narrative rather than presented separately. Custom illustrations reinforced continuity across sections and strengthened the journey concept introduced at the outset.

Key Moves

  • Translated a journey-based narrative into a clear, structured reading experience
  • Introduced consistent visual framing for mentors and mentees
  • Elevated quotes to bring human voices forward
  • Developed custom illustrations to reinforce continuity across the report
  • Integrated data within the narrative to strengthen flow and context
  • Provided editorial guidance to refine pacing and reduce repetition

The Outcome

The final report presents a cohesive and engaging experience that connects data to human impact. By aligning narrative and visual structure, the report strengthens how GEM communicates with donors and stakeholders — creating a clearer and more meaningful understanding of its impact.
